Discovering structures in 5e technology class
In technology class, 5e students designed a stable structure able to support a given weight.
In their 5e technology class, students worked on a practical, personal project on building stable structures. This fun and educational exercise explored the basic principles of stability and the distribution of forces, while developing practical and creative skills.
Aim
The aim was to design a stable structure able to support a given weight. Students were introduced to the essential concepts of construction and engineering, while thinking about which geometric shapes are best suited to stability.
Materials
- wooden sticks;
- paper;
- cardboard;
- string and other items to reinforce the structures.
Questions to explore: what is the most stable geometric shape? How can forces be distributed within a structure to prevent it from collapsing?
Learning by doing
Each student worked independently to imagine, design and build their own structure. Some chose suspension bridges, others triangular models or innovative shapes. The triangle, a particularly stable geometric figure, was a favoured solution for distributing forces and making the structures solid.
Results
The projects show real commitment and great creativity. Each structure illustrates the students' personal efforts to understand and apply the technological principles seen in class.
The activity helped students develop their critical thinking, powers of observation and ability to solve concrete problems. It also encouraged them to experiment, learn from their mistakes and improve. Well done to everyone for their creativity and hard work!
